Coordinated Water System Plan Update

In 2025 the county commissioned a third-party consultant to conduct a review of the Coordinated Water System Plan (CWSP). In January, Dr. Chris Kelly, the county’s hydrogeologist, presented a summary of the recommendations and action items at the work session of the Board of Island County Commissioners (see the presentation in the working committee agenda (pages 45 to 55)).

If you want to follow further progress, there is a dedicated web page on the county website for the Coordinated Water System Plan Update. It currently describes the establishment and role of the Water Utility Coordinating Committee (WUCC), lists the key focus areas for the update, and provides a high level breakdown of the work schedule.

Just this past week, the Board of County Commissioners approved a resolution forming the WUCC which is a necessary next step in proceeding with the update project. You can watch the brief discussion along with the resolution approval here, starting about 3 minutes into the meeting.

Still to come are links to the consultant’s report highlighting key focus areas and additional details on upcoming meetings. This is a key program towards managing the future development and sustainability of the county’s water systems, something that affects all public and private water systems in the county.
